Research article from the ERA Chair and collaborators from Macquire University and The University of Queensland, Australia published in the top journal Nature Communications discovered and evolved native capacity of methylotrophy (methanol assimilation) in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors use a systems biology approach to reveal global and specific genetic and metabolic rearrangements that support improved methylotrophy in the laboratory evolved yeast. This research paves the way for further biotechnological development and fundamental understanding of methylotrophy in the preeminent eukaryotic model organism and industrial workhorse, S. cerevisiae.
